Proud to be American Made

Are you patriotic and proud to be an American?  Aren't we all?  We are proud to inform that our palm trees are TOTALLY made in the USA.  That includes the manufacturing and assembly of the entire structure.

Whose idea was this?

It all began as a husband's anniversary gift to his wife whose home was in Florida but who now lived with him in Kansas.  The husband wanted to give his wife something special for their anniversary and remembered how much she loved palm trees.  He decided to build her one out of metal.  It took 6 months to complete.  When the neighbors saw it planted on his property, they wanted the original sculpter to build them one and the designer palms concept was started.  The original tree from 2001 still stands beautifully as a reminder of Wendell's love for his wife.

What are they made of?

As is the case for most sculptures that are designed for "maintenance free" outdoor or indoor viewing, the palms are constructed from metal.  A specialized aged galvanized steel wraps and is welded to a structured skeleton reinforced diametrical and radial frame that can support many times the load of topped metal fronds (leaves).  The palms are over designed in this manner to withstand snow, ice, and hail storm environments.  They have been tested to withstand sustained winds of up to 100 mph and wind gusts as well.  Architectural design parameters incorporate compressive stress benefits that increase the normal fatigue strength of the used steels.  Every palm is prewired for immediate or future installation of the optional resin coconut lights. The frond stems are made from heat treated carbon steel.  The fronds are made from the same galvanized metal to assure lasting maintenance free outdoor use.  The design and material is Patented #6596353

The decorative ones for inside artistic use are made from polished or brushed stainless steel and copper.  We offer a combination of either Polished Stainless and Copper or Polished and Brushed Stainless steel.

Who buys them?

Our trees are designed for both residential and commercial installations.  Some of the reasons that individuals or families buy them are as an anniversary or birthday gift, conversation piece, center piece or theme to decorate around, and special art that not everyone has.  They can be installed in the interior of homes to decorate large rooms or fill in high ceilings.  Outside they are great for patios, pools, decks, entrance ways, stairs, driveways, or other water and land areas.

Commercially they are an ideal way to decorate on a limited budget and increase traffic.  If your establishment has a festive or tropical theme, what better way to set the ambience than with palm trees.  There are no climate zone limitations. Plus our trees do not pose all of the problems associated with real palms:
1. Expense - (1/3 the cost of real ones)
2. Maintenance - no leaves to clean up, no insect infestation, no trimming, watering.
3. Size concern as they grow. We offer a choice of sizes - 7ft to 14ft trunk height
4. Weather conditions that kill or injure fronds or root systems.

Why buy them?

If you love palm trees but don't live where you can grow them or are tired of the costly and constant maintenance to grow them, you will want to have our palm trees.  If you are looking for art, sculptures, or decorations that will significantly improve the appearance of your commercial establishment, lobby, home, pool, patio, deck, etc...without taking up a lot of space, our palm trees are what you want and need to complete the scene.  A cluster of 3 palms has less than a 4ft by 5ft footprint, yet all of the beauty is captured well above where you stand.  They also provide significant shade that is permanent all year long.

Will they hold up to the weather?

The palms and trunk are made from a specially aged galvanized steel.  You will recall that this same rust proof steel was used for  high grade gutters and downspouts for years until lighter weight aluminum came along.  The aging is done so that the trees patina (oxidize) to become even more realistic in color.  The stems are made from carbon steel. As the tempered stems of the fronds age, they also oxide along with the fronds which enhances the realistic appearance of the complete tree.  When properly installed, they should be able to withstand winds of of up to 95 mph or better.  Being manufactured in Kansas, many installations in the midwest have seen severe ice, wind, snow, hail, and temperature variations without incurring any damage.

How are they installed?

Installing them is simple and direct.  No heavy equipment, such as a forklift or crane is needed.  After determining how the trees will be supported - concrete, stone, metal, or wood - appropriate preparation is made to the material.

Each palm has a metal plate strategically welded to the trunk base. In the case of concrete, or stone, a hammer drill is used to make mounting holes matching the dimensions of the palm's mounting plate (18" on center 4ea). Once the mounting holes are completed, the palm is maneuvered into place using a hand truck and secured to the concrete or stone. Anchors with bolts are inserted into the holes, the bolts are tightened, and the palm base is then secured into the material.

In the case of a wood deck, the 18" on center holes in the palm base plate provide the desired permanent installation support location.  The mounting holes are used to fasten into the wood vertical subfloor of the deck.

Next the preassembled coconut lights are installed as an option.  All trees are prewired for this option.  Finally the individual frond stems are inserted into the corresponding slots at the top of the trunk.  There are a total of 12 fronds of varying sizes.  Full instructions are included with each palm and can be downloaded by clicking on the PDF links below.  We also deliver and install them (including the concrete pad) if you are within our service area of WI, IL, and NV.

Our potted versions of the Barbados and Key West palms are pre-mounted in a solid concrete base.  Because of the weight (about 400lbs), installation consists of simply placing them at the correct location.  Extension legs may be added if there is extra concern regarding stability but usually are not necessary

Can you paint them?

Being entirely made of metal, it is possible but really not necessary or recommended that they be painted.  If you choose to, remember that once painted, they will need this repeated periodically as well.  Consider our palm art like a sculpture.  Would you paint over a sculpture?  Just let them sit outside or inside and watch them as they age to perfection.

Do they rust?

Since the trunks and fronds are made from a special aged galvanized steel, they do not rust.  They do patina with age much the same way that copper will patina. Once the oxide (patina) is completely formed, no more oxidation can occur unless the original oxide is removed.  The green patina that copper takes on is actually an oxide similar to what the palms experience.  Ideally you will not remove the protective oxide and hence your palm tree trunks and fronds are protected in the same manner to last for decades and decades.  The trunk steel is also pre-aged to give the correct blue/gray patina that you see in the photos.

How long does it take to make one or an artistic grouping?

You should allow for 2-3 weeks from order to delivery depending on the season when you order your palms.  Special orders for size, shape, or material will take longer.  For new construction, get your orders in as soon as final design has been determined.  This will help you lock in metal pricing and palm pricing for a possible protracted install date.  If you happen to be at one of our many home or art shows, you can sometimes buy the displayed items in our booth.  Our next show in WI will be at the State Fair in August 2011.

How do you ship them?

We construct special crates for standard truck shipment on a semi trailer.  They are then shipped to your destination.  The charge can range from $300-$500 depending on how many trees are ordered.  The crate weighs about 500lbs and is full sided to properly protect the contents.  Cost for shipment is dependent on location but ranges from $500 to $1000.

What about planning for new construction in the future?

Timing is everything for new construction.  We have a special program for this.  The metal for our palms needs to age 4-6 months to get the proper blue/gray patina.  For new construction, after receiving your deposit, we secure the metal and can guarantee delivery at today's pricing for later delivery.

How long has the manufacturer been in business?

The artist made the first "Gift" palm tree in 2001.  The first public showing was in 2002.  In the same year a patent was applied for with U.S. Patent 6596353 being issued in July 2004.  Since then thousand upon thousands of our palm trees have been installed across the country.  Our gallery map will pin point by state these installations.

What type of warranty is included?

Each and every palm art is personally signed by the sculptor.  Before installation, every palm must pass rigid inspection procedures.  The manufacturer warrants every palm tree with a 1 year limited warranty from date of purchase.  The complete warranty can be downloaded below.

Will they hold up to tornados, hurricane forces, or Santa Anna straight winds?

A qualified YES to all of these conditions.  Our palms can withstand winds of up to 100 mph and even greater than this when a few preparations are made.  Tornados are so random, severe, and fast occurring weather phenomona that there is usually little time to prepare.

Hurricanes, such as the recent "Irene" that hit the entire east coastal area, and Santa Anna straight winds that hit the west coat in December 2011 are known about for days or even weeks in advance.  Knowing this can make saving our palm trees a relatively easy task.  The fronds are removable as shown on our installation web page.  By removing the fronds and coconuts, and of course the monkey, the trees have gone through Category 4 Hurricane storms and high velocity straight winds with no damage as long as nothing but wind and water attack them.  Try that with a regular Palm Tree.
